The Inventor

Alan Adler is the kind of engineer who doesn’t stop tinkering. A Stanford engineering professor and lecturer, he holds dozens of patents. His first famous invention was the Aerobie flying ring — a rubber ring that holds the world record for farthest thrown object (1,333 feet, almost a third of a mile). The Aerobie sold millions. Adler used the proceeds to set up a small workshop in his garage in Stanford, California, where he spent his weekends inventing things. The AeroPress was one of those things.

Adler’s career has been a testament to the power of curiosity and the joy of invention. His work with the Aerobie flying ring not only revolutionized the world of flying toys but also showcased his ability to solve problems in innovative ways. The success of the Aerobie provided him with the financial stability to pursue his passion for inventing, leading to the creation of the AeroPress.

“The best inventions come from solving real problems in real life.” — Alan Adler

The Problem

Adler was a coffee drinker who was frustrated with his French press. The coffee was good but had sludge at the bottom. Espresso was too expensive and complicated. Drip coffee was boring. He wanted a brewer that produced clean, full-flavored coffee quickly, without bitterness. In 2005, he started prototyping in his garage. The first AeroPress was made from PVC pipe and a rubber plunger from a hardware store. It worked on the first try. That never happens.

Adler’s frustration with existing coffee brewing methods was a common one. Many coffee enthusiasts sought a brewer that could deliver the rich flavors of a French press without the sediment, the complexity of an espresso machine, and the monotony of drip coffee. His solution was to combine the best aspects of these methods into a single, user-friendly device.

The Engineering

How the AeroPress works: immersion brewing (like French press) combined with pressure (like espresso, but at 0.5 bar instead of 9). The plunger forces water through the coffee bed and through a micro-filter in about 20 seconds. The key insight: pressure prevents over-extraction. In a French press, the coffee continues to extract as you drink it. In an AeroPress, extraction stops when you press. This is why AeroPress coffee is never bitter, even with longer steep times.

The materials: BPA-free polyester thermoplastic copolyester (the same material used in baby bottles and medical devices). The plunger seal is TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), designed to last years. The filter cap threads are designed to never cross-thread. Every part is replaceable.

The engineering behind the AeroPress is a masterclass in simplicity and functionality. The device’s design ensures that the coffee is brewed quickly and efficiently, with minimal effort from the user. The use of high-quality materials ensures durability and safety, making the AeroPress a reliable choice for coffee enthusiasts.

The World AeroPress Championship

In 2008, a group of coffee enthusiasts organized the first World AeroPress Championship (WAC). The rules: competitors make one cup of coffee using an AeroPress. The winner is judged blind. That first year had maybe 20 competitors. By 2024, the WAC had events in 70+ countries, with national champions competing in a global final. The winning recipes are published online and studied obsessively. Some use inverted method, some use standard. Some use 185°F water, some use 200°F. Some steep for 30 seconds, some for 2 minutes. The variety proves the AeroPress’s versatility.

The WAC has produced legendary recipes: Jeremy Moore’s 2016 winner (inverted, 17g coffee, 200g water, 70°C water, 3 minutes). Paulina Miczka’s 2022 winner (30g coffee, 150g water, 80°C, 3 minutes, bypassed with 100g hot water). Each recipe is a unique approach to the same brewer.

The World AeroPress Championship has become a global phenomenon, showcasing the AeroPress’s versatility and the creativity of coffee enthusiasts around the world. The competition has inspired countless home brewers to experiment with different techniques and recipes, further cementing the AeroPress’s place in the coffee community.

The availability of user-submitted recipes, apps, and online forums has made it easy for anyone to get started with the AeroPress and experiment with different brewing techniques.

Why It Works

The combination of immersion (extracts oils and soluble compounds evenly), pressure (forces the water through the filter in a controlled way), and rapid cooling (the coffee leaves the brewer immediately after pressing, stopping all extraction) creates a cup that is simultaneously full-bodied and clean. No other brewing method achieves this combination. It’s not as clean as a Chemex. It’s not as full-bodied as a French press. But it’s the only brewer that gives you both in the same cup.

The AeroPress’s unique brewing method sets it apart from other coffee makers. Its ability to produce a full-bodied, clean cup of coffee without bitterness or sediment has made it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Contour baseline

Use the recipe as a starting point, then adjust one thing at a time: grind first, then ratio, then temperature. If the cup tastes sharp and thin, extract a little more. If it tastes dry or hollow, back off. Coffee is not a personality test; it is a set of variables.
