Young Hyson is a traditional Chinese green tea style with a name that dates to the East India Company tea trade of the 17th and 18th centuries — Hyson comes from a Chinese term meaning ‘flourishing spring,’ and Young Hyson refers to the early-harvest, smaller, more tender leaves. The tea consists of twisted, long leaves with a slightly grassy, sweet, and light character — less assertive than Gunpowder, more accessible than premium Dragonwell, and traditionally considered an everyday drinking green tea.

Young Hyson was among the most exported Chinese green teas to Europe in the colonial era, and it remains a classic style that bridges the gap between delicate premium greens and more robust everyday styles.

In the cup, Young Hyson brews a clear yellow-green. The aroma is lightly grassy and clean. The body is light, the flavor mild and pleasant, the finish clean and gentle.

Use 2 grams per 6-ounce cup.

This Young Hyson convinced my coffee-drinking husband to switch to tea in the afternoons. The grassy flavor is rich enough to satisfy but clean enough to feel restorative. We order 2 pounds at a time now.

Five stars without hesitation. I brew this using a French press and the crisp notes fill the kitchen. My afternoon ritual. I've been coming to the Alameda store for tea for over 15 years.

Good tea, just a touch light for my taste. That said, the classic notes are genuine and the leaves are clearly high quality. I'd buy another variety from Contour Coffee.

Really nice Young Hyson. The classic flavor is authentic and well-balanced. I usually drink Adagio tea but this compares favorably. Will definitely reorder.

My grandmother got me into tea and she would approve of this one. The Young Hyson has that old-world quality — crisp and classic in perfect harmony. This is what tea should taste like.
